In Greek mythology, Medusa is a Gorgon who is usually depicted as a human with snakes for hair. Gorgons were three sisters named Stheno, Euryale and Medusa, who had hair made of living venomous snakes and could petrify people just by looking into their eyes.

In one instance of an encounter with Medusa, Perseus was able to slay her by cutting off her head with the blade from Hermes’s winged staff.
